I had noticed the freezer part of my refrigerator thawing last week and could hear occaisionally something like a fan sputtering from the back. Yesterday the bottom part started getting warm, and now the freezer is the refrigerator. The machine is 17 years old (Kenmore). Should I call a repairman or get a new one?

to be honest, i would just get a new one. by the time they find the parts and repair it…it will cost you just about the same amount of money and time to find a new one.
Get a new one. The old ones use much more electricity and even if you buy a used one you will be better off…
You probably got your money’s worth out of that one. Instead of paying a repairman and then a few months later, having to buy a new one anyway, I would just buy the new one. Besides, they make them much more energy efficient now than before.
At 17 yrs it doesnt owe you anything…you may just need a refill of freon not a big deal…new units use much less power…i’d say it’s your call but I wouldnt put too much money into it.
Get a new one that is Energy Star rated. You’ll be shocked and amazed at how efficient it is and how much it saves on your electric bill. Basically, any appliance more than 10 years old should be replaced. The newer ones are so much more energy efficient these days.
You can also qualify for tax credits and rebates with Energy Star appliances. And, a lot of appliance stores will haul your old stuff away for free. Or you can sell it on Craigslist or something, or give it away to some place like Goodwill or DAV.
